A bottle of scotch whiskey, listed as the most desirable bottle of whiskey in the world sold for over $2.7 million in London, on November 18th. Sotheby’s Auctions sold the Macallan Adami 1926. It had been aged for 60 years in sherry casks until 1986 when it was bottled. It had been reconditioned by the distillery before the sale, with a replaced cork and new glue around the corners of the labels. The final price is believed to be a world auction record for any kind of alcoholic spirits.

So what is a $2.7 million whiskey like? Macallan’s Master Whiskey Maker Kristeen Campbell reported that it contained notes of ““rich dark fruits, black cherry compote alongside sticky dates, followed by intense sweet antique oak…..Dark chocolate, treacle, ginger” she explained, adding ““It was a very special moment to experience the opening of this iconic 60 Years old single malt, first bottled 37 years ago, and I hope the new custodian will enjoy the same privilege.”

It was one of just 40 bottles drawn after the aging, making it the oldest Macallan whiskey ever produced. Sotheby’s expected it to sell for about $934,000 to $1.4 million.
